次世代光メディア規格
次世代光メディア規格 : 東芝、容量51GBのHD DVDディスクを発表
東芝が、新しい51GBの容量を持つHD DVDディスクの仕様を公開しました。
3層レイヤーにより実現したとのことです。

According to a news published at HDTV, Toshiba has announced that it is submitting specifications to the standard's overseer for a new 51Gb format HD-DVD disc.
Basically, the capacity increase is obtained adding a third layer to already existing discs. Toshiba has not yet proved the technical feasibility of the new technology, but plans to release the new format towards the end of 2007.

Blu-rayは50GB容量を実現していますが、この3層HD DVDはそれを1GB上回ると宣伝している模様。
DVDは2層構造を超えることはありませんでしたが、次世代DVDは容量ウォーズがすでに始まっているようです。
レイヤーも4層くらいまで到達する可能性もありますね。
